I've often stated that dreams are abstract notions just waiting for action to be taken. And
what a dream I had in coming up with this idea. At the culmination of last school year, I wanted to give my students something truly special. They more than deserved it. Their year was hijacked by the coronavirus, leading to going completely remote. We made the best of it, but it was far from optimal.
Regardless, my babies were troopers and kept their toes tapping, so I went and had a dream. Since the students were practicing their Hamilton speeches, to be performed on FlipGrid . . . I went to work. I reached out to Mr. Miguel Cervantes. Mr. Cervantes is a Broadway and screen actor currently performing Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton Chicago.
Honestly, I did not hold out much hope . . . but as I always tell my own children and students: "The answer is always 'no' unless you ask." So, I asked! And he said "yes!" We talked about his chosen career profession along with its blessings and challenges. Feel free to watch our conversation below.
In the end, my students (and I) had a wonderful time hanging out with such a kind man. The coolest aspect was that some of my students actually saw him perform this show, in Chicago. What a treat! Regardless, I could not be more thankful to Mr. Cervantes for taking time out of his surely busy schedule to hang with the kiddies and I. Remember, if you can dream it, you can achieve it!
